Who is Flightless Bird?

Many sports brands promise you wings. I don’t.

I promise you the feeling of running: the struggle, the steep climbs, and the even steeper descents. That is the point. I don’t run for comfort. I run to feel alive, to be in the moment, and to step out of my comfort bubble. That is why Flightless Bird was born.

Hi, I’m Jochem

I’m Jochem Stevense, a UESCA-certified ultra running coach, a mountaineer, a husband, and a father.

I started running at about five years old at a local athletics club in the Netherlands. Like many of my friends, I left the club when other things in life seemed more important. Running slowly faded out.

At 26, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was warned that sport, endurance sport especially, could be dangerous. A few years ago, I realised that running is possible with diabetes. It just takes more attention and know-how. So I put it to the test with a hilly 55 km run in the German Black Forest.

I was hooked. My passion for running came back, and I have not looked back since.

I’m not slow, but I’m not a natural fast runner either. I work hard for every bit of speed and fitness. I know what my athletes go through, because I go through it myself every day.

Away from the trails, I’m training to become an International Mountain Leader and Wilderness Guide.

How I can help you

Running with type 1 diabetes. I have done the trial and error, so you don’t have to start from zero. I can share what works for me and what I have learned along the way. I’m not a medical professional, so medical decisions always stay between you and your doctor.

Building habits. Running consistently is hard in a busy life. I help you build habits that get you out the door, even on the days you would rather not.

Plant-based fuelling. After decades of a meat-heavy diet, I switched to fully plant-based eating. I plan my own race-day nutrition this way, and I’m happy to share how. I’m not a certified nutritionist, but I can connect you with knowledgeable nutritionists when you want to go deeper.

Mountain goals. Steep terrain and long days in the hills need their own kind of training. I can help you prepare for them.

Ready to feel the struggle (and love it)? Send me a message and we’ll plan a free 20-minute intro call to talk about your goal.
